Happy Birthday Indeed!

Today is my 33rd birthday! And what a great day it has been! It began a little earlier than usual when Banner decided to wake up at 6:45 - about an hour before he normally does. Sam got up with him and let me snooze a bit longer, but mostly Banner just kept getting in our bed telling me "Happy Birthday!" at Sam's request. Then, we got up to get our day going. My mom picked Banner and me up for swim lessons because she wanted to go with us today (she'll be taking him tomorrow on her own, so she wanted to see how it's done beforehand). Banner did well - got a little clingy after going under water a couple times - but he likes the water, likes jumping to me, likes playing on the little water gym they have in our class.

Then, we headed to my mom's house before Mom treated me to a pedicure. This was a great pedicure; the foot massage was amazing! On the way home, we grabbed a quick lunch, and then it was nap time. Once Banner woke up, we played for a bit then got ready for dinner with the family. Since I was 17, we have gone to the same restaurant for my birthday every year - minus a few years here and there for various reasons. This year was a little different there - they offered us a free bottle of wine and a free birthday cake with our picture on it! So neat! It's a hibatchi restaurant, so Banner was in heaven being able to watch the chef prepare our dinner right in front of him. The whole family could see each other, we played games with our chopsticks per Caden's directions, and then enjoyed some yummy cupcakes Mom had bought (we took the free picture cake home!).

On the way home, Banner spontaneously said, "Happy Birthday, Mommy!" which was so sweet. He finally seemed to understand it was my birthday - not his again. He sang a portion of the birthday song that went something like this: "Happy birthday, happy birthday, cake!" It was on tune, but missing a few words and obviously ending with his favorite part of a birthday!

As I rocked with him tonight, he turned to me after yelling "I love you, Daddy!" and whispered, "I love you, Mommy." When I told him I loved him, too, he said, "Mommy, I love you!" again. This was so sweet because he never says it this way, with my name first. I just hugged him tight and said, "Banner, I love you so much!" And, man, I do!!!

Today was a great day! I heard from lots of friends and family members, got some pretty awesome cards - loved what Brock, Mischelle, Blair, Caden, and Mara wrote; Banner's made me laugh; Sam's made me cry, and started my THIRD TRIMESTER as a birthday gift from my second son!! Tomorrow, Banner will get to see the first live images of his little brother at our 28-week sonogram! I'm pumped for this and hope Banner "gets" it a little better!

Here's to an amazing year as a 33-year-old! So far, it's starting out pretty darn fantastic! :)

Banner brought me flowers - love it with this shirt, too!

Camp Mommy: Weeks 1-2

Kids all over the country are out of school for summer vacation. That means three big things for my boy and me: 1) Mommy doesn't have any sub jobs coming up any time soon, 2) our usual hang-outs are closed to us or are on different schedules for the summer, and 3) life is going to change BIG time in less than three months. What's a pregnant, stay-at-home mom to do about this? Well, NEST of course! Only, instead of getting my unorganized house in order - only to be unorganized and made into a mess all over again by my 2-year-old, I am mentally nesting... trying to get some order in the chaos that is my life. The teacher in me came alive a couple weeks ago when I made a detailed June and July calendar for how Banner and I will spend our summer. (The August calendar is still under construction!)

I decided to have fun with this and get creative with what I'm calling "Camp Mommy!" Banner will start preschool in late August, so I'm motivated to both get him ready for really active days and to savor and soak up my time with him before he's off in the big world away from Mommy and before his baby brother begins to steal lots of Mommy's time and attention. Camp Mommy is designed to give us both a morning and an afternoon activity with or without friends who may want to join us.

So far, we've had a Sprinkler Play Date at our house - which was really pretty awesome if you ask me (watermelon, lemonade, Slip-n-Slide, baby pools, water tables, bubbles, snow cones, and popsicles); we've been to a concert for kids; we've gone to Story Time at the book store; we've hung out with Grandma; we've attended a weekday birthday party; we did crafts for Father's Day; we went to an indoor playground that just opened up in our area; we went to a local farm for a self-guided tour, a hayride, some animal feeding, and picnic fun; we went to the splash grounds with Caden, Brycen, and Grandma. So much fun so far!! Here are a few pics from the past two weeks as Camp Mommy began!

Still to come: we start swim lessons this coming Monday for two weeks, we will be going to the zoo, we will be making Fourth of July crafts and treats, we will have more play dates and park fun, we'll be experimenting with new tools and textures like scissors, glue, shaving cream, and finger paint, we'll be having fun with colored ice and painting the backyard with water, we'll visit Aunt Kira at her school for a glimpse of camp life, we'll try a toddler movie at the big theater, and we'll be trying out some new inexpensive indoor parks around town! Also on the agenda is meeting Baby Brother through sonogram images next week! Lots of fun experiences coming Banner's way.... more on Camp Mommy coming soon!

2-Year Well Check-Up

Today Banner had his two-year well check-up at the doctor's office, and I have to say, I am one proud mama! I've been on a high all day after watching Banner handle himself so well at the office - AND after hearing such great stuff from our pediatrician. Last week, Banner was diagnosed with an ear infection, and when we went in for our appointment, he did NOT want to be there - cried the whole time the doctor examined him. (Although, I will say that it wasn't our normal doctor because his schedule was already booked when I called in to get an appointment... so that could have been the problem, on top of not feeling well.) This time was significantly different, thank goodness!

At home, to help Banner prepare for the visit, we have been playing with his new doctor's kit he got for his birthday. I did not tell Banner he was going to the doctor until this morning, about an hour before. And, when I told him about it, I used the doctor's name rather than saying "the doctor." I also told him that we would be telling Dr. B about his school bus birthday party, which really excited Banner. He couldn't wait to tell about his fun party... in fact, as soon as Dr. B walked in the exam room, Banner said, "School bus party!" We got a kick out of that. Banner rode with Sam to the office (we had to take two cars), and apparently the whole way there, Sam taught Banner how to say Dr. B's name really well. He knew exactly where we were and who we were going to see. It also may have helped that there were lollipops available when we left after having his ears checked last week - so this time, Banner knew to continue asking for one the whole time!

When we were called back from the waiting room, we saw our good friend, Avi, talking with Dr. B (Avi's a pharmaceutical sales rep). I think that also helped Banner feel more at ease because he saw a familiar face in the office. Banner did great with the nurse measuring and weighing him, and our wait for Dr. B went quickly. Sam and I filled out the development questionnaire, and Dr. B said according to all the information, Banner falls somewhere between 2 years, 4 months and 2 years, 10 months. We'll take it, since he's only 2 years, 0 months! :)

We talked to Dr. B about our new baby coming in September, how to best prepare Banner for his arrival, when to switch out of a crib, when to potty train, and how to "contain" Banner when he's being his typical, active, exploratory self. He mentioned that Banner is the type of child who makes him believe in "leashes." I immediately turned to Sam and said, "I said the same thing last night, didn't I?!" because it's so true. I'm not a believer in attaching a "leash" to your child ever - but when it comes to Banner's safety, especially when my hands are full with another baby and we are out and about, I'm almost envious of the parents who have the nerve to "leash" their kids! Dr. B said we may have to get one for Banner and let him see that he has a choice to either stay near Mommy (or Daddy) or wear the leash. Ha! I'm not so sure I'm on board with this leash idea at all, but I was glad to know I'm not alone in my thinking and worrying about his safety . . . . and that we have the doctor's blessing if we need to resort to that! But, in all seriousness, we just have one active, inquisitive, curious kid on our hands, and I will do anything I have to do to protect him.

Then, Dr. B examined Banner, this time on the exam table like a big boy. In the past, we have held Banner on our laps while Dr. B examined him. Watching Banner up on the table like a pro was so fun for me as a mom. He didn't need us holding him, answered Dr. B's questions, looked him in the eye, and followed his requests to turn his head or to open his mouth. It was only when Dr. B laid Banner down that he got a little anxious and cried for Daddy, but once Sam got next to his face and I stood at his feet, he immediately calmed down with a frowny, quivering chin but brave as ever. I had never seen Banner actually make this face before. It was as if he was doing everything in his power to hold it together without crying. He  seemed to be telling himself to control his crying, a trick I have never seen him do before! It both pleased me and broke my heart all at the same time.

The only shot Banner was due for today was a Hep A shot, and again, he surprised us with his bravery and courage! He only cried for about 5 seconds after the nurse injected the shot. I expected the crying to continue or for him to want a paci - a rare treat to have outside his bedroom. But, no! He was awesome, and Sam and I looked at each other with surprise and great satisfaction!

Then, we headed out for a blue lollipop, and Banner was a happy kid. And, we were happy parents! More than anything, I'm repeatedly grateful to know my child is healthy. I know not every child is as blessed, not every parent is as fortunate. I left the pediatrician's office with a renewed sense of gratitude and appreciation for the fact that my child is thriving, healthy, smart, and growing.

Here are his stats from today:
WEIGHT: 28.6 pounds = 55th percentile
HEIGHT: 35.75 inches = Either 65th or 85th percentile . . . the nurse wrote one thing, the doctor told us another - and when I look it up online, it's unclear which one exactly, so . . . . need to clarify
HEAD: 49.5 cm = 75th percentile (Can you say, "Thank you, Daddy!"?)

Happy Father's Day!

Today we celebrated Sam's third Father's Day. I wrote last year and the year before last about this amazing man, so I hate to be redundant but this guy is just incredible. He's such a good daddy to Banner, and he's a supportive, nurturing, all-around good husband to me. Sam has worked so hard this year to start his new adventure in a new law practice, and there have been times we both wanted to throw in the towel - but we never gave up on this dream or on each other. We've taken big risks since last Father's Day, and seemingly they are working to our advantage almost a whole year later. We are slowly and steadily getting to where we want to be financially. But, perhaps, the most beneficial change this year has been a great deal of flexibility for Sam to be able to be home more - to work from home, to attend doctor appointments with Banner and with me, to be home for most every dinner, to have spare time to run around with Banner, and to have the family life that we both want so much.

Sam is always trying to spend as much time with Banner as he can. He wants to be home to help me, he lets me sleep in more than he should probably, and he is always willing to do me a favor or run an errand. The past 6 months of pregnancy have also been made easier by his constant willingness to do what I needed to make this house run more smoothly. It hasn't always been easy, but Sam has always stepped up and never complained (really, NEVER!).

More than anything, I want to thank Sam for being the kind of dad I always wanted for my children. He's one of the best gifts I can give to them. So, on this day, just like every day, I wanted to show him how special he is to us. I hope he enjoyed his Father's Day. Here's how we spent it:

When Banner woke up around 7:25, I got up with him to start working on our surprise breakfast for Sam, who slept until we brought in his treat around 9:15. Sam hasn't slept that late in a long time, so that was already nice for him - and me... because I always tell him he needs to sleep more. This man runs himself ragged and never gets enough sleep! We  (well, I ... but Banner was a great helper by playing nicely near me in the kitchen) made Sam a Cinnamon Roll Cake to start his day off. It was an easy recipe, and he said he loved it!

I don't have a picture of it, but after opening Banner's gift, Sam opened the gift I gave him - two new Polo shirts. He wore the purple one - seen below. After we got dressed and ready to go to Grandma & Papa's house, Banner and Daddy had a little game of chase.

Then, we headed to my mom's to celebrate Papa, Uncle Brock, and Daddy. YUMMY brunch and lots of loud little ones! Mom made quite the spread, and after we devoured it, there was swimming, logic puzzle solving, TV watching, and naps for the little guys (Banner, Brycen, and Nami). Nami smiled at me for the first time today, too. I am so in love with that kid. I've seen him smile before, but today it was directly at me - and I held him for quite a while just soaking him up - his smell, his softness, his sounds. Oh, what a sweet boy!

Caught with a mouth full of food - love the tie napkin too!

Our final destination of the day was Zaide's house, where we met the whole crew over there! Sam's Uncle Marc and Aunt Debbie are moving here from Minnesota, so we got to welcome them back "home" tonight. Also, Aunt Gayle picked up a cake for Uncle Paul and me to celebrate our June birthdays. More YUM!

Aunt Gayle captured this picture of Colby listening to his baby cousin - LOVE IT

Banner had a blast just running around . . . playing with cars/trucks, chasing his cousins, giving kisses to everyone, and going outside with Zaide. Tired and worn out, we headed home for bath time. We called my dad when we got home, and Banner got to wish Big Boss a Happy Father's Day, too. Then, Banner passed out shortly after I put him in his crib... where he is fast asleep as I type. What a fun, busy day we have had. I hope you have had as much fun celebrating the dads in your life as we did! Happy Father's Day, everyone!
